Tutoring

open bookArvin High School’s Bear Advantage Program is designed to increase academic achievement through structured before- and after-school activities that offer a variety of academic and enrichment support services.

In collaboration with community services such as the Arvin Police Activities League (PAL) and Lamont Boys and Girls Club, it offers services that are further intended to promote positive youth development for the participating students. Within the academic enrichment element, some of the services rendered to participating students include, but are not limited to, interactive educational activities for core classes, a peer mentorship program for identified at-risk groups (e.g., Special Education, English Learners, Migrant, Title 1), and specific intervention activities for assistance in Mathematics and English. Some of the specific intervention activities for example include expansion of tutoring hours and intensive workshops on subject matters and reading skill development assistance (e.g., on-line math tutorials structured work on phonics, work attack, and guided reading).

The Bear Advantage program further provides participating students with career and college assistance, such as SAT/ACT preparatory classes and FAFSA workshops. Besides the educational enrichment component however, the Bear Advantage program further provides participating students the opportunity to unwind and destress from all the pressures around them via recreational activities. Some of the entertaining, yet engaging and positive recreational activities include: physical fitness activities (e.g., dance, aerobics, and weightlifting), sports (e.g., baseball, soccer, volleyball, and intramural sports), and arts & crafts (e.g., music, drama, mural painting, drawing, and scrapbooking).

Through strong community partnerships and a broad range of academic and enrichment activities overall, the Bear Advantage program allows students the opportunity to excel in academics, recreate in a safe and fun environment and build strong ties within the family and community.
